"Open Stacks" refers to the collection of library items in Sims Hall that is open to the public and free to browse. Books with call numbers AC1 A4 through E278 C9 are considered "open." To check out these items, you must come to Sims Hall to find the book and then bring them to the Circulation Desk to be checked out.
"Closed Stacks" are library items that are not accesible to the public and cannot be browsed, located in Brett and Mahan Halls. Books with call numbers HF1601 through Z are considered "closed." There is also a small number of items in Sims Hall ( E278 G14 through HF1601) which are considered "closed." To check out these items, you must first find them in the catalog, then log in to your library account, and lastly request the material. Please see below for more details.
If you find an item which is held in closed stacks you will need to place a hold request. The item will then be retrieved from the book stacks for you and delivered to the Circulation Desk to be picked up. You must have a library keytag to establish a library account in order to request items from the library catalog. Timing may vary for how quickly requested items will be delivered. See delivery time schedule for more details.
You may also request items that are checked out to other patrons and from off-site storage.
To place a hold request:
Once you have found the item which you would like to request from "closed stacks":
1. Sign in to your library account through either the "My Account" tab on the Library Catalog homepage or through the "Library Account/Renewals" link on the library web page.
You will then be asked for your ID/Keytag number:
2. Sign in to your account using the number on the back of your library keytag or using your Empower number:

Locate the barcode on the back of your library keytag. The 10 digit number below the barcode is what you want to enter under "Borrower ID." For instructions on how to find your Empower Number, please click here.
3. Once you have located your item in the library catalog, click on "Place Hold" to request the item:
4. Once you have requested an item to be placed on hold, you will be able to check on the status of your hold requests by clicking on "Review My Account":
View the current delivery schedule. Please note that items requested on Thursday, Friday, Saturday ,Sunday, holidays, or during closed periods and inclement weather will take longer to arrive. If an item is requested on a Thursday, Friday or on the weekend, the item will not be available until Tuesday after 2:00 pm.
