Counterintelligence: Hafis Salich

Counterintelligence can be described as activities designed to prevent or thwart spying, intelligence gathering, and sabotage by an enemy or other foreign entity. This guide provides books, articles, reports, websites, and videos on the subject.

Hafis Salich

Hafis Salich was an immigrant from Georgia who had worked for the Berkeley Police Department, and later became an employee of the Office of Naval Intelligence in San Pedro CA.  Because of his law enforcement background and knowledge of the Japanese language, he was then hired by the U.S. Naval Intelligence Bureau.  He was assigned to investigate Japanese activities in Los Angeles.  Salich was persuaded by Mihail Gorin, an intelligence agent of the Soviet Union, to sell classified information on U.S. monitoring of Japanese officials and Japanese-American citizens.  The FBI soon discovered the espionage and arrested both Salich and Gorin.  They were convicted under the Espionage Act, with Salich sentenced to a $10,000 fine and four years in prison.
