This Research Guide helps patrons of the NWC Library make the most of their library experience by introducing important databases and resources available to them. It serves as a starting place to learn how to use the library online catalog and databases.

DTIC (Defense Technical Information Center)

The Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) is the "premier provider of DoD technical information."

The DTIC technical report collection consists of student papers from the Naval War College and other service schools as well as contracted studies and technical reports produced in support of the defense community.

Searching DTIC: Basic Search

  • From the DTIC home page, select  Search Technical Reports.
  • Enter search terms in the search box. Click Search
  • Use quotation marks for phrases. Just as with Google, AND is assumed between terms.
  • To search for the phrase,  Taiwan Straits,  type “Taiwan Straits.”
  • To search for BOTH words, not necessarily in a phrase, type Taiwan Straits (equivalent to Taiwan AND Straits). To search for EITHER word, type Taiwan OR Straits

  • Use Advanced Search for more complex searches and options such as limiting the results to certain file format (i.e. PDFs) and domain (i.e.  .mil)
  • Select the Advanced Search option from the DTIC Home page. You can select Technical Reports in the drop down "Collections" field.


Searching for NWC Student Papers

  • You can limit papers to those from the Naval War College by typing "Naval War College" (in quotation marks) in your simple or advanced search.
