Deterrence theory is a military strategy that has been around for quite some time, gaining popularity during the Cold War as the threat of nuclear weapons loomed. After the breakup of the Soviet Union, deterrence took on a broader spectrum. This Research Guide takes a look at the different types of deterrence; with articles, books, websites, and videos on the subject.
Deterrence can be defined as a military strategy under which one power uses the threat of reprisal effectively to preclude an attack from an adversary power (Encylopedia Britannica). In particular, Strategic Deterrence refers to the prevention of adversary aggression or coercion threatening vital interests of a particular power and/or national survival (Strategic Deterrence Joint Ops Concept, 2004).
Escalation can be described as an increase in the intensity or scope of a conflict that crosses a considerable threshold affecting military confrontation, and can be unilateral but is often reciprocal and involves several combatants with high stakes associated (Morgan, F. "Dangerous Thresholds: Managing Escalation in the 21st Century.").
